UAN Activation: Complete Guide
Your UAN (Universal Account Number) is a 12-digit number that EPFO allots to every Provident Fund member. It is the key to everything EPFO-related: without an activated UAN you cannot log in to the member portal, check your passbook, update KYC or file a withdrawal claim. The good news: activation is a one-time, five-minute process done online with a mobile OTP.
What is UAN?
Think of the UAN as your permanent PF identity. Earlier, every job gave you a separate PF account number and the records stayed scattered. With UAN, one number follows you across all employers — each employer gets a separate member ID, but all of them link to your single UAN. Activation is the step where you claim that number: you verify your identity with an OTP and set a password, which creates your login for EPFO's online services.
Where to find your UAN
- Salary slip — most employers print the UAN on monthly payslips.
- Employer HR / payroll — ask your HR team; they allot it when you join.
- Know Your UAN — the EPFO member portal has a "Know Your UAN" option where you can retrieve it using your registered mobile number, Aadhaar or PAN.
How to activate your UAN — overview
Open the member portal
Go to the official EPFO member portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) and choose the Activate UAN option.
Enter your details
Fill in your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number and email exactly as per your EPFO records. The mobile number must be the one linked to your UAN.
Verify with OTP
Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. This proves the number belongs to you.
Set your password
Create a password for your member portal login. Your UAN is now active — log in with it from now on.
After activation — what next?
Activation unlocks the portal, but most services need one more step: KYC. Seed and verify your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account (EPFO KYC guide) — only then can you file withdrawal claims, check the passbook smoothly, or update details. Think of it as: activation gives you the key, KYC opens the doors.
Common problems
- Details don't match — the name and date of birth you enter must match EPFO's records exactly. Ask your employer to correct mismatches first.
- No OTP received — the OTP goes to the mobile number registered with your UAN. If you changed your number, update it through your employer before activating.
- Already activated — if someone (often the employer) already activated it, use "Forgot Password" on the portal instead of activating again.
